Event Description:
Did you know that you can train your dog to pee and poop on command? That is exactly what our presenter, Zechariah Matson, has done with his dogs. Join us to learn about this and more!
During this presentation Zechariah will share his experiences in the field of dog training, to include the many different sub fields that are encompassed within it. Subjects that will be discussed include learning theory, animal behavior, dog psychology, service dogs, narcotics detection, and competition sports. Included in the presentation will be time for students to engage in a Q&A session in which they can ask questions specifically on what subjects they find interesting regarding dog training.
Presenter BIO:
Zechariah Matson is a Mount Wachusett Community College alumnus who graduated with his associates degree in Fire Science Technologies in 2014. After Achieving his goal of earning an associates degree, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as an 0351, Infantry Assaultman, and was stationed in Jacksonville NC where he still currently resides with his wife and son. While stationed in North Carolina, Zechariah and his wife got their first dog, a German Shepherd named Thor, and attended their first dog training class together. It was at this time that a passion for training dogs blossomed and what started as just a simple obedience class turned into a lifestyle and hobby. Both Zechariah and his wife Carly volunteered under a local dog trainer and assisted in training service dogs for individuals with disabilities, many of whom were veterans from the Marine Corps suffering from PTSD.
In addition to training service dogs, Zechariah also began training dogs in narcotics detection and behavioral modification. In 2020 Zechariah felt as if he had learned enough from his mentorship to start his own dog training business named, The Matson Pack Dog Training. On top of running his own dog training business, Zechariah still serves in the United States Marine Corps on active duty and has found ways to balance life between his service to country and a passion for animals.
Additionally, he has sought to continue his education currently working on a bachelors degree in psychology. He hopes to eventually earn a master’s degree in psychology so that he can apply what he learns to his dog training as well as help veterans struggling with PTSD. At this time Zechariah and his wife own 5 dogs, one being his wife’s service dog and two being dogs trained in the competition sport of IGP also known as Schutzhund which involves aspects of tracking, obedience, and protection.
